Potty Training - Days Four and Five

On day four we had a full day with no accidents from either kiddo, and therefore, I announced on Facebook that Naomi was also potty-trained. Perhaps I celebrated a little too early...I should have waited. :) We decided to go back to pull-ups just for nighttime...for both kiddos. More for our own peace of mind than anything. Isaac is still waking up in the middle of the night to use the toilet...just as if he was still wearing underwear. So that's fine...but I like the extra comfort of knowing that in case he forgets, he's covered.

Naomi woke up with a wet pull-up this morning, but emptied her bladder on the toilet right after getting up (in the 5 o'clock hour, I might add). However, she put up a HUGE fight to keep her pull-up on. I handed her her favorite princess undies, and she threw them back at me, saying, "No unnerwear...I want a pull-up!" Uh oh. Just wonderful. I didn't fight her, but waited a little while until Isaac came down and then we changed both of them at the same time, saying good bye to the pull-ups as they threw them away. She seemed okay with it now. Whew!

She did okay for the first part of the morning, as long as I reminded her to go to the potty. Otherwise, she just peed on the floor. After her second accident, I put a pull-up on her. Maybe she's just not ready for this? At least she has learned how to go on command if she needs to go. That's a big step. But she still hasn't transitioned into feeling like she's going to go...and then letting mommy know before she lets it out. It's been five days now and I think we're just gonna give it a break for awhile. The girl practically threw a fit this morning when I asked her if she was ready to change into her underwear. She made it perfectly clear that she wanted the pull-up. So why fight it? It's MUCH easier on us all if she's still in the pull-up.

If she tells me that she needs to go potty, then I will joyfully take her and let her try. But I am not going to spend countless hours every day watching her like a hawk, reminding her to tell me when she needs to go, and waiting to whisk her away when she looks down at her underwear and starts to pee. Hehe. I'm just exhausted and done for now. Oh...and I forgot to mention that we've all been sick this week as well. Ha! They've had pretty nasty colds and now I have a wicked sinus infection. Just makes things even more challenging on my end...just picture this sleep-deprived, totally exhausted, stuffy-nosed, watery-eyed, head-pounding mommy on her hands and knees scrubbing urine-soaked carpet a few times a day. Yeah. Not a pretty sight. :) Maybe we'll try again in a few months.

For some good news, Isaac has continued to stay dry since the beginning of day two!! He's doing GREAT! :)

  1. Thanks for sharing your successes and failures in this process. We had many of the same experiences with Daria as you're having with Naomi. She'd do great for a day or two and then backslide. We tried and tried and TRIED and she didn't get it until almost her 3rd birthday (and we started at 2). I swore I would wait with Nathan but he's shown lots of signs of readiness and after reading your story, I was going to give it a try... now I think I'm going to wait again. :)
